Industry is facing a turning point: let's look in detail at what human-centric factories are and what can be done to set them in motion.

At the center of Industry 5.0 is the human: technologies should not replace human labor, but support it and make it more efficient and safe. This translates into transforming factories into human-centric, or human-centered orientation, where:

> Workers have a proactive and participatory role in the company's decision-making processes.

> The work environment is comfortable and designed for people.

> Workers' health and well-being are the priority.

But so what does it entail to have human-centered factories? What is meant specifically?

Transforming the model of industries and making them human-centered means moving from a system that sees productivity and efficiency at the forefront, often putting the impact on the environment and workers on the back burner, to having technologies that can be put to work for people, safely, that make daily tasks easier, and that can "relieve" people from heavy or sometimes complex and dangerous work.

Having factories with this model can enable them to bring benefits to the worker and the company such as:

  • Work-life balance, making people happier, more active and motivated.

  • Increased respect and cooperation among workers, going for diversity.

  • Improved product quality, having workers more attentive, involved and guided in the production process.

But also benefits for the organization, such as:

  • Energy efficiency, which is possible thanks to IoT technologies that regulate energy and temperature in an automated way, for example, going to lower consumption and costs.

  • Production efficiency, where industrial automation acts to mechanize the production line making it safer and more efficient and allowing for a single interface for different machines with each other, less waste and higher productivity.

  • A greater focus on sustainability, as companies as a result can adopt greener practices aimed at reducing the environmental and energy impact of their operations and production facilities.

To foster this new system where environmental and social sustainability thus go hand in hand, extra help comes from Transition 5.0.

Italy is moving in this direction, and just in these weeks the government is defining a decree to help companies incur expenses and benefit from tax credits.

System integrators play a key role in this context. Thanks to their transversal expertise, they can accompany companies toward sustainability and Transition 5.0: they help in the design and implementation of IoT solutions designed for energy and production efficiency, leading to a reduction in consumption, and adopting user-friendly technologies that simplify work.

Making factories more efficient where humans and technology work together to get better and better every day therefore has numerous benefits, both socially and environmentally and from the perspective of manufacturing operations.
